At John Jay we’ve come a long way in our thinking about Artificial Intelligence in the classroom during the past couple of years. When students began using Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, many in our community were rightly concerned about academic integrity and the undermining of the efficacy of teaching and learning. More recently, many here have taken a more nuanced view, understanding that students (and faculty) are routinely turning to AI, and that its use is being integrated into workplaces of all types. Many, if not most, believe the challenge is to teach students to engage with these tools responsibly and productively.

A New Pressbook from John Jay College: Flipping the Pyramid: Developing Critical Thinking Skills with GenAI
The John Jay Teaching & Learning Center (TLC) is delighted to share a new open publication that showcases our faculty’s insights and advice on creating and revising assignments that prioritize critical thinking skills and support students taking active, constructive steps with GenAI tools. This guide, Flipping the Pyramid: Developing Critical Thinking Skills with GenAI, contains assignments and commentary from 29 full time and part-time John Jay faculty who participated in TLC seminars in 2024-25. We include theory, examples, questions, and takeaways in addition to model assignments. As a complement, we have created an assignment repository on CUNY Academic Works with openly licensed assignments that can be used, adapted, and referenced (all with credit to their authors). Many thanks to our incredible faculty and co-authors Gina Rae Foster (Director of the TLC) William Perrenod and Bruce Shenitz, our John Jay OER Adjunct Librarians! Please read, bookmark, use, and share! Quick link: CunyFlipping the Pyramid.
